Ferrybridge A

Description and History of Site:-
Red brick in English bond, with dressing of white terracotta. Rectangular plan containing turbine hall and boiler house as coupled receding wings to a front office block.

Now (2018) used as a training centre, offices and workshops by RWE Npower. The third power station constructed for the Yorkshire Electric Power Co., building began in 1926 and the station was operating by 1927. The main building, which still stands, housed the boilers, turbines, offices and workshops. A smaller building housed the electrical distribution switchgear. The station had its own railway sidings connected to the LNER and a wharf on the Aire & Calder Navigation. Eight boilers, arranged in pairs sharing the four chimneys were capable of evaporating 75,000 lb of water, superheated to 700 °F at 315 psi. There were two three stage turbo-alternators running at 3,000 rpm. The alternators produced 50 Hz 3 phase AC at 11 kV, which was transformed up to 33 kV for distribution.

In 1947 the station was taken over by the British Electricity Authority which itself became the Central Electricity Authority in 1954 and eventually the CEGB.

By 1963 the capacity was stated to be 163 MW composed of 2 x 20 MW Brown-Boveri generator sets, 2 x 42.5 MW and one 45 MW set by English Electric. By 1976 October 25th, when the station closed, it had a generating capacity of 125 MW.
