Salterhebble Aqueduct

Description and History of Site:-
Reinforced concrete trough aqueduct across the Hebble Brook built to replace an earlier wooden trough structure. Built to replace a wooden trough aqueduct originally constructed in 1815/6 to connect the Salterhebble locks with a new cut down to the present Woodside Lock at SE 10135 21328 immediately above the point where the Elland Upper cut formerly re-entered the River Calder above Long Lee weir at SE 10072 21264. Although wooden aqueducts were rare, high maintenance costs of the structure dictated that the 1986 replacement would employ contemporary concrete technology though its design was intended to resemble the timber structure that it replaced.
