Description and History of Site:-
Austere, virtually windowless stone building with a recessed panel across the full width of its frontage designed to carry the name of the premises. Entrances with roller shutter doors were later additions, though evidence of the in-built chimney for the boilers was visible in the south east corner prior to re-development. The site once formed part of a yard which ran off Blackledge, called Piece Hall Yard, upon which two wool warehouses fronting onto Thomas Street were erected shortly after 1826. Five firms of woolstaplers are listed in 1845 under Thomas Street, though it is unclear which of them occupied these two properties. During 1897 Clayton Schofield, woolstapler and A. & W. Greenwood, wool waste dealers were the tenants, but in the following year plans were submitted for the erection of a three storey ice factory and cold store. The Halifax Ice & Cold Storage Company provided facilities for traders in the adjoining Piece Hall fish, fruit and vegetable market until at least 1936; thereafter the premises were occupied by market traders for warehouse purposes, the last of whom was Helliwell Brothers fruit and potato merchants. During 2012 the building became incorporated into the Orange Box youth education centre.
