Seacroft Mill, Betty Barkers Mill, Whin Moor Mill

Description and History of Site:-
A 19th c. tower mill built of magnesian limestone. The tower of mill still stands to about half the original height, and is now incorporated into a 1970s hotel on the site.

The mill was shown on the tithe map of 1834 when the owner was stated to be John Pearson. It was still in use in 1928, but not powered by wind. For many years during the 1930s it was known as Betty Barkers Mill, taking its name from the owner or tenant of the farm in which it formed apart. In some documents, however, it is recorded as Whin Moor Mill.

Gregory & Turner 2009 noted a newspaper report of 1767 told of a storm which had blown down a mill at Seacroft.

It is understood that two pairs of millstones were installed and that there was room for a third. A fireplace had a flue leading up through the walling to two external vents. For some years a shallow conical covering replaced the original cap. When the adjacent farm buildings were demolished in 1969 the tower, isolated by then, looked extremely fragile. Five years later, with a reinforced lining and twelve feet of the top again reconstructed, it was incorporated into a new hotel complex, now the Ramada Jarvis Hotel for which the tower now serves as a lounge at ground floor level, and has heating apparatus above.
