Description and History of Site:-
Site now cleared, awaiting redevelopment.
The 1895 OS mapping marks the site as a 'Stone Saw Mills', presumably associated with the older sandstone quarries to the north and east. The buildings were disused in 1906 when they were taken over by Israel Newton & Sons, boilermakers. Renamed as Summerley Boiler Works, boilermaking continued at the site until 2011 when the company was acquired and operations moved to the Milton Works in Chapel-en-le-Frith.
By the time the Summerley Works closed, Israel Newton & Sons were one of the very few remaining traditional boilermakers in the UK, specialising in heritage boilerwork using rivetted hot-pressed steel plates. The works were visited in c2004 by the late Fred Dibnah MBE as part of the 'Made in Britain' series. The works stood derelict in 2015 and have now been demolished with the site cleared by 2016.
