Description and History of Site:-
Three, four storey, stone-built warehouses surrounding a central courtyard with impressive frontages to Horton Street and Church Street; two carriage entrances.
Bearing a date stone of 1861, this monumental group of warehouses named India Buildings were erected for Mr. J. Riley. Early occupants included Sutcliffe & Co., woolstaplers, Peter Allet, woolstapler, Bottomley & Co. cigar manufacturers in 1874. During 1887, Bottomley & Co. remained in occupancy whilst the other two warehouses were used by David Smith & Co., wool merchants and Joseph Smith & Bros., dry soap dealers. In 1905 one of the occupiers was Saville Lawson, piano and organ dealers. By 1936 the tenants included the Crown Leather Co., and Barlow & Noble Ltd., boot and shoe factors. The building is presently occupied by Furniture City, retail furniture warehouse.
