Description and History of Site:-
Freestone quarry and tramway in Limber Hill Wood, Glaisdale.
Well before World War 1 a freestone quarry was opened up in Limber Hill Wood, Glaisdale, with a tramway for transporting the stone to the NER North Yorkshire & Cleveland Railway. A large amount of money was spent on installing cranes and other infrastructure, but this soon fell out of use.
A newspaper article announced a sale by auction on July 7th 1876 by Turner & Mead under a "Distress for Rent" order. Included were 200yds double line railway plate, 200yds wire rope and barrel, loose railway metal and iron, 4 small wagons, 2 tip wagons, 4 cranes, an almost-new winch, wheelbarrows, grindstones, portable blacksmiths' stoves, bellows, anvils, picks, malls, rope, crowbars, metal and wood wheels, deals, chains and trestles.
An 1893 map shows the tramway and a crane still in place, and many of the articles for auction were still on site when the iron was used in World War 1 for making armaments.
