Description and History of Site:-
This mill was built by John Dickinson in 1825, his third in the valley. It is possibly the first purpose-built paper mill, i.e. not a conversion from another use.
It has been totally demolished (apart from the workers’ housing) and is now offices and light industrial units.
1825 Mill constructed to house Dickinson’s ‘Endless Web’ machine.
1888 Mill sold on to be converted to a paper coating and finishing works
1930s Expanded to include production of gummed paper and paper tape.
Post WW2 ‘Holdfast’ self-adhesive tapes manufactured
1959 The mill was rebuilt prior to merger in 1966 with Robinsons, the manufacturers of Sellotape
1980 The mill closed; 300 jobs were lost
