Description and History of Site:-
Former extensive brewery which occupied most of the land between Romford High Street and the Eastern Counties Railway, and between South Street and Waterloo Road.
A brewery was established here in or by 1799 when Edward Ind purchased the Star Inn with a pre-existing small brewery attached, beside the river Rom. He was joined by partners George and Octavius Coope in 1845, and the company was later allied with Allsop. The brewery was damaged by enemy action 8 December 1940.
The 19th-century yellow stock brick buildings fronting High Street, from two to five storeys, survive, with ROMFORD BREWERY COMPANY lettering still in place. Part of these buildings is used to house the Havering Museum.
The ornamental iron gates on High Street also survive, with hop flowers and leaves ornamentation, and ROMFORD BREWERY COMPANY incorporated in the ironwork. The lettering IC & Co [Ind Coope & Co] survives over the High Street gateway.
The former White Hart public house (three storeys) adjoins to the east at 15 High Street (qv).
A large copper vat from the brewery has been re-erected as a 'feature' at the corner of High Street and Waterloo Road (qv).
There was an internal rail system, linked to the Romford goods yard on the south side of Romford Station via a 'tunnel' under the main line (qv).
The brewery site straddled the river Rom which is now largely culverted (qv).
The brewery works site is now occupied by the Brewery shopping centre and associated car parks. The site was redeveloped in 2001 as The Brewery shopping centre, with one of the 160 ft (50 m) chimneys (qv) incorporated into the design.
