Description and History of Site:-
Substantial area of made ground covering the former garden of the Jolly Sailor public house (qv) and adjoining land, bringing the level of this land up to that of the railway embankment on the east side, and South Norwood High Street on the west.

The garden of the Jolly Sailor (before the railway was built) sloped down to the Croydon Canal (qv), which was at or below the level of the present Portland Road.

There are disused public toilets (qv) built into the Portland Road end of this made ground. The 'fill' was possibly derived from the Goat House railway cutting (qv) a little to the north of the Portland Road bridge (qv).
