Description and History of Site:-
Railway station opened by LBSCR 1 June 1859, replacing the earlier station in South Norwood which had been opened by the London and Croydon Railway on the north side of Portland Road as Jolly Sailor Station (qv) in 1839.
The main entrance and station buildings are on the west side, facing Station Road - a range of one and two storey buildings in yellow brick, with slate roofs with, at the south end, a three-road two-storey goods shed (qv) of six bays now (2003) in alternative (undetermined) use.
The yellow brick two-storey main block appears to be the original 1859 building. It has a Victorian wall letter box in the front wall, to the (qv) left of the main entrance. The single storey southern wing (which has similar brickwork but wider windows may be a later extension. The single storey northern wing has red brick window sides and is certainly an addition, probably in two or more stages.
There is a very short stub bay platform at the south end of platform 1 - only a single track between platforms 1 and 2 - (platform 2 not officially in use.) There are three island platforms, each having two flights of steps (guarded by iron railings) communicating with the station subway. The island platform 2/3 has no platform buildings. The island platform 4/5 has two timber platform buildings. The island platform 6/[7] is little-used, and has no track alongside what would (if counted) be platform 7 - there is a single brick platform building.
All platforms are linked by a station subway with access from platform 1 and a rear entrance to Clifford Road. This subway was widened by authority of the LBSCR Board on 18 December 1901 and declared to be henceforth for the use of ticket-holders only.
The station is at times heavily used by those attending football matches at the Crystal Palace Football Club's Selhurst Park ground. In view of this, the platforms and access stairs are extraordinarily narrow. However, the station predates the football club.
In 1862 an additional platform was added on the east side of the station for services to and from the line to Birkbeck and Bromley via the Norwood Spur (qv.) There is space for two tracks beyond the un-numbered platform 7. The station buildings beyond this include a very short, narrow disused platform, and a small ticket office which is evidently still in use (weekday rush hour mornings only.)
In 1910 an entirely separate pedestrian subway (qv) was created under the station to segregate the general public from ticket-holders. This is still in use.
