Description and History of Site:-
New street driven through old property by Bazalgette for Metropolitan Board of Works at cost of over £500,000, 1862-4.
First road in London to have a central 'subway' to carry water, sewage, gas pipes and other services (these later included hydraulic mains and telegraph wires). The existence of the subway is indicated by frequent gratings and occasional access grills in the road. Similar subways exist beneath several subsequent MBW roads.
