Description and History of Site:-
Dinting railway station is located on a triangular junction between the former Manchester-Sheffield main line via the Woodhead tunnel and the branch to Glossop. Two platforms remain in use with surviving station buildings. There are also buildings on two disused platforms, one or them converted for non-railway use, and one derelict. There is also a signal box with a 43 lever mechanical frame, controlling modern colour light signals. The railway is electrified, with the overhead line wiring and structures installed for the 1500V DC electrification in 1954 still in use, modified with new insulators when it was converted to 25kV AC in 1984.
The main line from Manchester to Sheffield opened in 1844, and a station opened along with the branch to Glossop in 1845. The branch line connection originally faced towards Sheffield and the station was further north than at present. The tracks were re-aligned in 1884 to give a triangular junction with platforms and station buildings on the Manchester-Sheffield and Manchester- Glossop sides of the triangle. The signal box is a Great Central Railway design installed in 1905.
