Tamworth Road Railway Bridge

Description and History of Site:-
A railway bridge which carries the Derby to London railway line over Tamworth Road (B6540) adjacent to Long Eaton railway station. The main span is a stone built skew arch. A second much smaller span to the East is a concrete box structure with stone facings.

The Network Rail bridge reference is SPC6 19.

The main arch was constructed in 1837-1838 for the Midland Counties Railway to the design of Charles Blacker Vignoles, To provide adequate headroom for the road without raising the railway embankment height, the road dips under the bridge and has been liable to flooding ever since. The additional small bridge to the east, with a higher level roadway to provide a dry route through in wet weather, was added before the line opened in 1839, at the insistence of the turnpike road proprietors. The original cast-iron beams of this part of the bridge were replaced by a concrete box structure in 2005. The adjacent station was not opened until 1888. It was originally named Sawley Junction and renamed when the original Long Eaton station closed in 1968.
