Prospect Ironworks

Description and History of Site:-
Site extant (2022) in use by a variety of light industrial operations.
In the 1850s, William Whiteley set up a factory on this site principally to manufacture textile machinery. Known to have included iron and brass foundry facilities by 1861, at which time the operation employed more than 100 men and boys.
Continued as a family run business into the early C20 by which time it employed 500 people producing textile manufacturing and finishing machinery and machine tools. Being conveniently close to Lockwood Station on the L.&Y.R. between Huddersfield and Penistone, the factory had its own private sidings for the dispatch of finished goods.

Part of the factory complex has, more recently, been used by David Brown, gear manufacturers of Huddersfield.
