Bailey Hall 'G' Mill

Description and History of Site:-
The mill of 1863 was six-sided and six storeys high, with simple string coursing the only decoration, apart from the top floor which had decorated, round headed windows surmounted by a deep panelled cornice. After it ceased to be used for flour milling, a warehouse building was erected on the hillside behind by Messrs J. & J. Baldwin in 1893. During the 1950s further alterations and additions were made by John Mackintosh and Sons Ltd. to make it suitable for confectionery manufacture. The whole of the 1863 building has been demolished apart from its plinth, but at the rear, substantial parts of the later structure remains in use as self storage units. The mill was the second to be erected by the co-operatively managed Halifax Flour Society, built in 1863. The unusual shape was dictated by the steepness of the hillside behind, its proximity to the railway viaduct, and the need to provide access between it and other premises to the west, adjoining Berry Lane. As business continued to expand, the Society required a still larger mill, which was erected on an adjacent site at Bailey Hall (WYK790). Having become surplus to requirements following the successful commissioning of the new mill in 1879, the older six storey mill was sold to Patons and Baldwins who produced knitting wools there for many years. Patons and Baldwins re-located their business to Darlington in the late 1940s and sold the mill to Messrs. John Mackintosh and Sons Ltd. who made extensive alterations to the premises including new steel pillars and beams, relaying the floors with pre-cast concrete beams and tiling their surfaces. The building was used for the manufacture and wrapping of Toff-o-luxe as well as Fruito and other boiled sugar confectionery. Later, under Nestle ownership the building was disposed of, and the older portions demolished, whilst the section at the rear was converted for use as a self storage warehouse.
