Coal Drops, Halifax Station Goods Yard

Description and History of Site:-
Rock-faced ashlar with wooden bunkers. Fifteen wooden bunkers are each supported between stone piers and to the north an open shed, with beyond a battered top wall topped with a parapet. Geared pulley systems operated iron ratchets to raise metal doors, but unfortunately these metal fittings were stolen some years ago. A fence now protects the site, but trees have since been allowed to grow behind it, obscuring most of the structure from view. Coal drops at Halifax Goods Yard, built in 1874 for the Ovenden and Halifax Junction Railway. This is a rare and large scale example of railway coal drops.
