25 Horton Street

Description and History of Site:-
The site comprises two stone-built wool warehouses of four storeys, erected back to back with frontages one to each of Blackledge and Horton Street. Two warehouses erected for Robert Hartley, woolstapler, in 1869 to the designs of Roger Ives, architect. Robert Hartley & Co. occupied the premises in 1874, but by 1887 it was being used by T. Wayman & Co., also woolstaplers. Wayman had acquired the adjacent property at number 27 Horton Street (qv) some time prior to 1878. During the twentieth century the premises were occupied by a variety of businesses including the Halifax Motor Exchange in 1936, and subsequently by a number of different retailers. During 2017 the property was converted for use by the Leeds Beckett University as a business enterprise centre.
