Description and History of Site:-
This was a huge open quarry exploiting Millstone Grit Group beds. In modern times it produced aggregate and sand but in the 19th century concentrated on dimension stone products and flags, even in 1909 worked as four discrete but linked quarries: the two main ones were Flappit Spring in the northern half of the current quarry, and Ludgin Hill Quarry in the southern half. At least four travelling-crane railtracks were used to transfer stone blocks from where steam cranes had lifted them out of the quarry to the dressing floors and sheds. Stone was also moved on tramways in flat carts pushed by men on overhead gantries. Horse-drawn wagons took large blocks away from the quarry to railway depots on the Keighley side of the moor. Its origins are unknown but in the late 19th century it was major operation run by Joseph Clayton Stone Merchant and Quarry Owner. It ceased working after 2000.
