Moorfield Inn/Brewery or Moorfield Works

Description and History of Site:-
The site comprises a substantial stone-built house facing Free School Lane, behind which is a compact group of buildings set around a courtyard with an entrance way from Ingram Street. The site formed part of Moor Fields, acquired in 1852 by John Horsfall who developed the site over a twenty year period with a mixed development of housing and these small manufacturing premises. The house bears the date 1853 and appears to have been intended for use as an inn with a brewery behind, for which purpose it was advertised for sale in 1855. It seems never to have been used for this purpose, and in 1874 was occupied for roller cloth manufacture by Thomas Helliwell who carried out various extensions to the premises. Later the building was used by Moorfield Wireworkers, and from the 1950s by B. Rhodes and Son for similar purposes.
