Runtlings Mill

Description and History of Site:-
Giles & Goodall wrote: "Steam-powered shoddy mill, built c1907. Brick-built, with buildings arranged around a yard. Carbonising sheds, dyehouse and drying sheds on one side. Main range provided shed with six, later seven, bays for rag-grinding machines; attached engine house, with surviving horizontal engine, boiler house and chimney. Important example of a purpose-built shoddy mill. Part demolished."

'RHODA', the 1908 horizontal tandem compound engine, by Marsdens Engines Ltd of Heckmondwike, was recorded in 1970 by Peter Ellis. The engine was of 36 inches stroke with high and low pressure cylinders of 12 and 23 inches respectively, Corliss valve gear, and a Marsden type governor controlling the engine speed by advancing or retarding the phasing of the camshaft.

Parts of the mill were still standing in 2002, but all demolished by 2007 and the site redeveloped to housing.
