River Don Works

Description and History of Site:-
Vickers Moved to this site in 1864 from the smaller Millsands site in central Sheffield and built the worlds largest crucible steelworks. Products included ships propellers and propeller shafts. Gun and steel armour plate manufacture began in 1888. Electric power was installed by 1897 with the North Gun Shop (demolished) is claimed to be worlds first engineering workshop with all machines individually powered by electricity (in 1902). Part of the site occupied in 2015 by Sheffield Forgemasters who make world class high quality special steels (eg for nuclear and aerospace uses) and make and machine very large castings and forgings. 1906 office block (qv). Behind this an open hearth melting shop from Penistone (qv) the foundry in 1994. West of that the first Armour Machine Shop (c1890) a Pattern Shop. Medium Forge facing the railway is recorded in 1871 as Hammer Shop. most brick walls removed but roof structure substantially intact - used for storage in 1994. Works power station at SK 386 900. South Machine Shop (around SK 384 901) built in 1897. Four- gabled tower at SK 38165 89686 is Gun Heat Treatment Plan 1913 by Sir William Arrol.
