Hatfield Main Colliery

Description and History of Site:-
While much of the site is slowly being cleared, there are moves (2018) to preserve some buildings and use parts of the site for educational and heritage purposes. The headstocks to both shafts now listed Grade II. Opened 1916. No1 shaft: John Musgrave and Sons, Bolton, horizontal twin cylinder winding engine built 1913. No 2 shaft: Markham and Co., Chesterfield, horizontal twin cylinder winding engine built 1917. Original brick office block and other buildings. Baths 1933 by Kemp. 1980s coal preparation plant and tower by railway for loading merry-go-round trains. Mining stopped in 2001 and restarted in 2007; various owners in the early part of the 21st century with most operators going insolvent. The site was earmarked for a high-tech coal burning power station scheme which did not happen. Mine in production (mid 2014). Closed 2015.
