Monckton Main/New Monkton Colliery

Description and History of Site:-
Monckton Main colliery opened in 1875 with two shafts into the Barnsley seam. The company was restructured in 1901 with the assets of the old Monckton Coal Company (Monckton Main and Hodroyd collieries, the coking plant, coking by-products plant and brickyard) being taken over by the New Monckton Collieries Limited. In 1920 the coke ovens and by-product plant at the colliery were transferred to the Monckton Coke and Chemical Company Limited (SYK00003). The colliery was converted to a drift mine in 1970, but the reserves were exhausted by 1989. Tall concrete winding house extant in 1994.
