Rockley Engine House

Description and History of Site:-
Newcomen engine house dated 1813 (but could be earlier). Used to drain an iron ore mine (probably used to drain coal pits as well). Shaft is marked by earthworks in field to the south. Engine reputed to have been moved to the Chapeltown area circa 1870 for further use. Engine house and Rockley Furnace (qv) close by are both owned by South Yorkshire Industrial History Society (2017).
