Croft Bridge

Description and History of Site:-
Croft Bridge. It has seven arches, five of 11.3m span, one of 8.5m and a small unribbed opening at the north end that tapers from 5.2m to 3.05m in span. To record the settlement of a dispute between the justices of Durham and the North Riding of Yorkshire concerning to the maintenance of the bridge, a boundary stone of blue fossilised limestone was inserted in .the parapet of the third pier from the Durham side. Now hardly decipherable, the Latin inscription read DVN CONTRIBVAT NORTH RID. COM.EBOR.ET COM. DUNEL. STATU. APVD. SESS. VTRQe. GEN. PAC. AN.DO.1673
This ribbed masonry arch bridge probably dates from the fifteenth century. The bridge was widened in 1795 but some of the original masonry on the downstream side is easily identified by the red colour of the sandstone used in its construction
