Dog Kennel (or Scaleber) Mill

Description and History of Site:-
Most of the mill buildings have long since been demolished and only one structural wall survives so it is impossible to describe how it originally looked. The tailrace is extant but is culverted beneath fields and allotments; the small mill pond is now a (disused) covered-over waterworks reservoir. The mill manager's house - Scaleber Cottage - is still in residential use. In the late 18th century it was owned by Thornber & Co who also operated Runley Bridge Mill but in 1803 it was let to Messrs Proctor who ran the Snuff Mill in Settle. In 1837 Thomas Brennard was listed as a spinner at Dog Kennel, living in the cottage. The OS map of 1847 named it as 'Dog Kennel Mill' and it had closed by c. 1850, soon to become a mechanical workshop.
