Description and History of Site:-
The main east-west road through Settle, prior to the turnpike road being created in the mid-18th century, ran down Kirkgate from the town centre to cross the Ribble at this ford. Until very recently the approach to the ford on the east (Settle) side was a public right of way but that has now been lost. Subsequent river erosion has removed all traces of the ford, steeping the banks on both sides. see 4a
