Middleton River Wharfe stonary

Description and History of Site:-
There was a series of sites along the river where limeburners leased rights to take limetsone cobbles form within the river bed and to burn it into lime in kilns (now gone) alongside the river. Sites are known at:

1. on the river bank close to the town centre (SE 1184 4807).
2. where Denton Road now runs (SE 1307 4834) It is known from archival sources that such leases were given in the 17th century but it must have a genesis much earlier than that.
