Description and History of Site:-
This is a roughly-triangular shaped quarry, now largely grassed over with some working faces still clear of growth and with waste piles on the quarry floor and on its edges. It extends c. 350x350m and is up to 8m in height, being cut into the hillside rather than downwards.Part of a tramway bed is still visible in the northern part of the quarry, linking Small House and Smellows Quarries with the rail facility. Part of the rail-side loading gantry has survived but there is no other surviving infrastructure. The two deepest parts are now water filled. It was opened up by John Delaney (qv Horton and Threshfield Quarries) in 1899 who went into partnership with John Smith, a stone merchant in Leeds and they took out a 21-year lease from the Broughton Hall Estate and traded here as Broughton Quarries Co. Ltd, giving them rights to work stone, build lime kilns, erect crushing and screening plant and build six cottages in Broughton village. No kilns were built but the quarry's high-quality 'blue' limestone was valued as hard-wearing roadstone. By 1929 the limestone was giving way to shale beds and it was abandoned in 1930 or 1931.
