High Mill

Description and History of Site:-

Built on the site of an earlier corn mill in 1791 and insured together with the contents and a house for £2,000 in 1792. Machine parts were bought from Kirkstall Forge in the 1790s. Cotton spinning continued until the 1860s after which the building had various other industrial uses until it was turned into flats.Joseph Mason bought the corn mill and started building this mill in 1791. He also had a warehouse on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal. The mill was handed on to Joseph's nephew, also Joseph, who continued at the mill for many years. In 1853 Thomas Johnson was listed as a cotton spinner and manufacturer at this mill.
