Black Quarry

Description and History of Site:-

This is a spatially very large quarry hole though no more than c. 10m deep maximum. It operates with modern crushing and screening plant, operated by Cemex and producing mainly crushed stone. No historical infrastructure remains. In 1870 two local farmers, named Kettlewell and Hammond, leased the site to get crushed stone for use on local roads - their descendants, with a Mr Watmough, continued operating it and a new lease was negotiated in 1930 by Fred Kettlewell, coal merchant at Harmby, Fred Ward from Richmond, Isaac Wood of Yeadon, a road contractor, and Mawer Hammond, trading as Harmby Stone (qv NYK 01488). The quarry stayed small and low-tech until the 1960s, new crushing plant having been installed though in 1955-56, and in 1963 Leyburn Stone was bought out by the Hargreaves Group which installed new tar-coating and crushing and screening plant, and output mushroomed with the quarry advancing ever northwards, reaching its present northern extent by 1972, and pushing south to almost join up with Leyburn Shawl Quarry (NYK01489). In 1995 the RMC Group took over the quarry and it still operates today, under Cemex, as Leyburn Quarry.
