Millstones End

Description and History of Site:-
An area which worked Lower Howgate Edge Grits for millstones, at an altitude of 550m, with several abandoned and part-finished millstone and dimension stone block roughouts scattered across this part of the moor. Three millstones stand out:
at SD87792 93598 with a millstone 1.7m in diameter and a thickness of 0.28m, with a flat base and rounded convex upper surface, propped up on slabs, with a curved negative offcut lying below and clear pick tooling marks on the upper rim.
at SD88023 93566 with a millstone 1.7m in diameter and a thickness of 0.23m, lying still in situ.
at SD88073 93557 with a millstone 1.2m in diameter and a thickness of 0.2m, this one being less complete than the other two.
The whole area is very difficult ground with much peat bog and no evidence of cart tracks or sledways was found and no cabins or other ancillary infrastructure suggesting that these are early workings. Nothing has been sourced.
