Pratt Engineering Company Ltd

Description and History of Site:-
After this business was wound up, the site was sold to the British Red Cross which built a flat roofed structure at the front of the site that still exists today. The Red Cross moved out in the 1980s and the building changed hands several times before being converted into the current suite of offices for small firms. In 1932, garage proprietor Kenneth Hartley Pratt, residing in house at 64 Thirsk Road, bought adjacent plot where he started building trailers weighing under 2 cwts that did not require brakes. In 1936, he designed a coupling between car and trailer for which he was granted a patent. Each year, he exhibited his popular boat trailers at the national Boat show in London. The firm was wound up in 1965 when he became too ill to continue and he died the following year.
