Piercebridge Roman Bridge

Description and History of Site:-
Remains of parts of a large bridge that carried Dere Street across the river Tees. They now lie high and dry on the south bank of the river. Any evidence from the original north bank has been destroyed as the river course moved in that direction since the bridge was built. Thought to be the second Roman bridge across the Tees, built in the early 3rd century and may have remained in use until the late 15th century when the medieval 'Pierce Bridge' was built. The remains of the Roman bridge were discovered in 1972.
