Whitby Railway Station

Description and History of Site:-
Whitby Station. c 1847. The York and North Midland Railway built the present station to the design of its architect G T Andrews who also designed the nearby locomotive shed. The station included a fine 'Euston Truss' overall roof which was removed by British Railways in 1953 and replaced by the present canopies. At her visit on the 24th October 1973 Hatcher noted:- By Andrews. Within spitting distance of the harbour. A very nice portico with arcade of five semi circular arches. Emphasis given to the central arch by thickening columns into piers and extending pilasters up to the cornice. Columns of rectangular section on low plinth bases. Neat angular caps. Neat simple moulding round arches. Projecting cornice supported on rather closely spaced stone corbel brackets. Large stone walls enclose the station area mutilated by addition of weather boarded structures. Behind the arcade t left two large sash windows surrounded by mould. Triumphal arch as central doorway/main entrance. Alternating long and short segmental vousouirs and quoins down side. Semi-circular arch no caps. One window on the right. Only cantilevered roofs over platform.
