Selby Old Railway Station

Description and History of Site:-
Converted to a goods station when the new passenger station was built. Now used as a distribution centre. Mainly of timber weather-boarded construction on cast-iron columns. Rather gaunt. (Hatcher 1974). One engineering feature of interest are the structural supports to the platform awnings. Cast iron columns at 13 ft centres (cross wise to the track) carry cast iron Vierendeel type girders having four full panels with two reducing panels at each end for the 8 ft 6 in cantilevers. Similar roofs exist at Durham (HEW 453) on the main line and at Hexham (HEW 924) on the Newcastle and Carlisle line.
The realignment of tracks through Selby in 1891 for the higher speeds of the new York and Doncaster line swept away the remains of the separate Hull-Selby and Leeds-Selby passenger facilities and produced a new station. Until 1983, Selby station was on the East Coast main line, and rather busier than it is today. With the development of the Selby coalfield in the 1980's and the probabilities of mining induced subsidence in the area, and also as the station and its swing bridge across the River Ouse presented a bottleneck for high speed running, it was decided to bypass Selby with a realignment of the East Coast mainline (known as the 'Selby Diversion'). The works were paid for by the National Coal Board.
