Rievaulx Mill

Description and History of Site:-
Three storeys stone and pantile. Wheel 18 over-shot. Had silk for further refining stone ground flour. Probably not the Abbey Mill. Top storey has been added. The enrance has a semi-circular doorway like Bransdale. In front elevation six carved corbels presumably from the Abbey. Main (lower) structure in hammer faced stone. Lintels sills quoins (which are very long) and top course of lower storey in herringbone tooling. The top storey is in rougher finished stone with thick mortar joints and small quoins and wooden lintels. Three bays. Two badly decayed composite stones at the rear of the building. One solid stone acts as back door step/ Three old stones in front of front door. Fed by springs in hillside At west small extension in larger rougher stone. Herringbone tooled gable stones have now been raised to gable height. The mill became disused in 1961 and is now converted into a house but retains its waterwheel, pit wheel, two laying shafts and sack hoist.
