Dogdyke Pumping Station

Description and History of Site:-
A Scheduled Ancient Monument Dogdyke Pumping Station is one of only two steam pumping engines remaining in Lincolnshire.

A wind-pump is recorded as having been erected on the site in 1796. This had 36ft(10.97m) sails driving and 16ft(4.87m) scoop wheel to lift water from Mill Drain into the River Witham.

In 1855 this was replaced by a Bradley and Craven of Wakefield low pressure double acting 26hp A-frame rotative beam engine with a 12ft 3in(3.73m) beam and a 14ft(4.27m) flywheel with a separate condenser. This drove a 24ft(7.32M) diameter scoop wheel with wooden floats at about 7 rpm and can lift about 25 tons (22.7tonnes) of water.

In common with many of the drainage pumps in Lincolnshire the steam engine was superseded in 1940 by a 40 hp Ruston & Hornsby 7XHR single cylinder diesel engine that runs at 300 rpm driving a 22 in. Gwynnes centrifugal pump that can lift 40 tines(36 tonnes) of water into the River Witham. The diesel pump was erected in a new building adjacent to the steam pump. In turn, this diesel pump was superseded in 1979 by two fully automatic electrically driven pumps. The diesel station was however retained by the Witham 3rd Internal Drainage Board for standby use.

In 1973 a preservation trust was formed and has restored the steam engine to working condition and is open to the public on selected days throughout the year.
