Haile Sand Fort

Description and History of Site:-
Three storey, circular fort on an hexagonal base in reinforced concrete with armour plating on the southern bank of the Humber Estuary built 1915-18 to protect shipping. Companion to the larger Bull Sand fort 3.75 km to the north near Spurn Point.

Haile Sand Fort had full amenities for a garrison. Armaments, besides the usual small and rapid-fire weapons, consisted of two six-inch guns. An anti-submarine net of steel mesh was stretched across the mouth of the estuary between the two forts.

A reputed 40,000 tons of concrete and steel went into their construction, at a cost of £1,500,000. Both forts were constantly manned during both world wars, and were often under attack from aircraft and submarines. The army left in 1956, but the Forts were still manned until the early 1960s, when both were sold to the Humber Conservancy Board.
