Bilsby Mill

Description and History of Site:-

An early 19th-century tower mill, reputedly built in 1861 to replace an earlier post mill, though its construction style suggests it may be older. Constructed of red brick, partly tarred, the mill originally had four storeys, later raised to five in the late 19th century. The tapering tower features planked double doors, a first-floor glazing bar pivot window on the sides, and a two-light pivot window on the second-floor front. The top stage, added in the late 19th century, includes corbelled-out eaves.

The mill was once winded by an endless-chain hand wheel and operated by wind until 1932, after which it ran briefly on an oil engine. It had four patent sails driving multiple pairs of stones, of which two pairs of greys survived into the 1980s. One pair of stones was fitted with iron spur gearing for engine operation. By the 1980s the mill remained standing but capless. It has since been refurbished. The adjacent bakery continued operations into the 1990s.
