Cannon Street Station

Description and History of Site:-
SER terminus designed by E M Barry (architect) and John Hawkshaw and J M Barry (engineers). Hotel demolished and train-shed roof, damaged by bombing, removed. Two tall brick side-walls and twin towers by river survive; also undercroft, used for meat storage (now sports club). Recently refurbished.

Two listed 130 ft towers by Sir John Hawkshaw survive at the country end of the original station. Cannon Street was opened 1 September 1866; closed 5 June 1926; reopened
28 June 1926; closed 5 August 1974; reopened 9 September 1974. Hawkshaw's station roof was demolished in 1958 - 59 following severe war damage.
