Greenwich Observatory Time Ball

Description and History of Site:-

Dropped daily at 1 pm although its use to chronometer makers in Clerkenwell or to shipping now superseded. Present ball made by Maudslay, Sons & Field of Lambeth and sited on north-east turret of Octagon Room in 1833. Observatory buildings now part of National Maritime Museum but still house many important telescopes and other astronomical instruments.
