Description and History of Site:-

Established 1856 as South Kensington Museum of Science & Art from funds of Great Exhibition Includes industrial design within its brief; extensive reserve collections of ceramics, etc. Majolica and mosaic decoration by Mintons and others on West Staircase and in former Refreshment Room, 1866-78.Iron work from original temporary buildings of 1857, the 'Brompton Boilers', now forms part of Bethnal Green Museum (qv) in Tower Hamlets.
