Description and History of Site:-
Postman's Park, which is next to the former Post Office headquarters, was laid out in 1880 by combining three small burial grounds. Its most important feature is the memorial shelter created by George Frederick Watts, the Victorian artist, and opened in July 1900. The rear wall of this shelter comprises 53 Doulton tablets honouring 'acts of heroic self sacrifice': many are industrial in nature. For example, 'Thomas Griffin, fitter's labourer, April 12th 1899. In a boiler explosion at a Battersea Sugar Refinery was fatally scalded in returning to search for his mate.'
