Offices And Housing, West India Docks

Description and History of Site:-
Former Excise Office outside the gate, 1807. Bow end. TQ372806. Cottages for Dock Company's constables, 1819, in Garford St. Guard house (1803?). Small circular building, one of former pair built as lock-up and armoury. Architect George Gwilt. 371806. Quadrangle Buildings (1824). Offices, engineer's workshops, stores and cooperage. Imposing entrance arch with Portland Stone dressing and granite door surrounds. Architect John Rennie the younger. Sheds on north side are on cast-iron stanchions and give some idea of how early transit sheds would have looked, none having survived. Outside the engineer's office is cast-iron bench mark reading 'THW 1800' indicating Trinity High Water level. TQ370806.
