King's Cross Goods Depot

Description and History of Site:-

Great Northern Railway 1850s railway complex on unprecedented scale, and probably unique in retaining many original facilities. Joseph Cubitt, engineer, and Lewis Cubitt, architect. Magnificent stock-brick 6-storey Granary, 1851-2 with timber floors and cast-iron columns and beams, connected to Regent's Canal by basin and tunnels (now filled in). Behind are the original Goods Sheds, 1850, 580 ft long, arcaded walls 25 ft high. Remodelled and re-roofed 1936-8. Eastern Coal Drops, 1851, built for major new traffic of Yorkshire coal, providing rail/road transfer facility. Building 500 ft long, 50 ft wide (4 tracks) and 3 storeys high. South end converted to Bagley's Glass Warehouse. Western Coal Drops, 1859, converted to good sheds in 1897 when the adjoining 2-level Western' Goods Shed built on site of Coal and Stone Basin. To east vestiges of temporary passenger terminus 1850, with open-spandrel arched beams, and 1888 roofs of the Potato Market extension surrounding the many-times altered Midland Goods Shed of 1850 and '57. Disused hydraulic accumulator tower here c. 1880 with accumulator in situ. Coal and Fish Offices by the canal built by GNR in 1850s which reflect importance of this traffic. Former stables in arches beneath. Substantial Goods Offices, 1850, now Regeneration House, and 3 other offices building c. 1870.Massive development ongoing over this whole area with some old railway buildings being restored for new use. The Western Goods Shed has been demolished.
