King's Cross Station

Description and History of Site:-
GNR terminus designed by Lewis Cubitt, 1852. Simple but impressive frontage of stock brick giant arches with Italianate clock tower (clock made by Dent's for Great Exhibition). Double-sided plan characteristic of 1840s and 50s - one side each for arrivals and departures. Original porte-cochere and offices on Departure side, and former cab road on Arrivals side. Each trainshed, 800 ft long by 105 ft wide. Original laminated timber arches replaced in wrought iron (east side 1869, west side 1887). Suburban station added, 1875 on west. Cast iron shoes for the arches are original.
