Hull Dock Company

Description and History of Site:-
Built by C G Wray 1868-71 for the Hull Dock Company in the Italianate style. Faced in Ancaster stone ashlar, the basement is of Bramley Fall Stone and sculptures of Portland Stone. Subsequently used for the Town Docks Museum. Currently (2018) houses Hull Maritime museum. The Hull Dock Company was formed by the Hull Corporation, Hull Trinity House and local merchants in 1773, the first statutory dock company in Britain. Land was provided by the Crown for the construction of the docks and an Act of Parliament in 1774 authorised the Company to raise money. The Old Dock (later known as Queen's Dock, 1778), Humber dock (1809) , Junction Dock (later known as Prince's Dock, 1829) and Railway Dock (1846) were all built to the west of the River Hull. East of the River, Victoria Dock (1850) was to become the main timber dock.

Later developments, to take advantage of the increasing development of rail transport in and out of Hull were the Albert Dock (1869), St. Andrew's Dock (1883) and King George Dock (1914) all being developed by railway companies. Eventually, a series of take-overs and mergers lead to the formation of 'Associated British Ports' in 1981. More recently, with the decline in maritime transport, some of these docks were filled in.
