Description and History of Site:-
This Victorian facility which was closed in 1980 is still owned by Northumbrian Water but is now opened as a museum by a Preservation Trust. It contains a 1904 built beam engine and a 1914 gas engine believed to be the largest working preserved example in Europe.
Atkinson (1974): 'At the Darlington Corporation waterworks on Coniscliffe Road is a building dated 1849, originally housing two engines. Adjoining is a building of 1903 holding an engine, used only infrequently, which was erected in 1904 and built by Teesdale Bros of Darlington. There are two cylinders, of 18in and 29in with 7ft stroke. The engine pumped 1,800gal per minute, and went out of regular use in about 1930.'
Falconer (1980): 'The Darlington Corporation Waterworks on Coniscliffe Road contain a series of engine houses dating back to 1849. A Teesdale Bros compound rotative beam engine of 1904 has survived and also a rare set of suction gas pumping plant installed by Hornsby & Sons.'
